The post claims that the government is providing a free relief fund of Rs 7500 to every citizen. The post is shared along with a link to avail of the fund. The post reads, “The Government has finally approved and has started giving out free Rs.7,500 Relief Funds to each citizen. Below is how to claim and get your credit instantly as I have just done now https://funds4covid-19.com/.”

 News Verification: We found the viral post on the Meghalaya Police website https://megpolice.gov.in/rumours-circulated-social-media-fg-has-finally-approved-and-have-started-giving-out-free-rs-7500 Meghalaya Police has alerted people not to believe this rumor.  

We clicked on the link https://funds4covid-19.com/ shared along with the viral post. We found that the link asked to share this message in 7 WhatsApp groups to get Rs 7500. 

The Fact Check Unit of Press Information Bureau (PIB), the nodal agency for government information, has also termed this claim as fake. The Twitter handle of PIB Fact Check wrote - “Dawa- In a viral WhatsApp message, it is being claimed that all citizens are being given Rs 7,500 under the Relief Fund. #PIBFactcheck: The link given in the #Fake viral message is fraud and it is a trap. Please beware of such misleading WhatsApp messages and fraud websites. "

Verdict: In our investigation, we found that the news is misleading. The viral claim of giving Rs 7,500 to every citizen from the lockdown relief fund turned out to be false.
