Detailed Analysis: A massive fire broke out in the income tax office in Mumbai on Friday, however no causalities were reported, however the political parties and news media were fast to speculate and link this to Nirav Modi. The Inc Congress within hours tweeted “In a rather convenient turn of events, a fire burned papers that the Income Tax Department had on Nirav Modi , the man who was photographed with PM Modi before he went on the run after pulling off the largest banking fraud in India.”

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, the official said. Witness posted images and videos of the fire on social media.

The real problem was after the reports which began to emerge that crucial files related to Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, accused in the 11,000 crore PNB scam, have been gutted. Major news media reported this. Zeenews media reported this news as doubt of the burning of the Nirav Modi’s related files.

The tribune directly said that the “Files on absconding jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi apart from several others wanted for economic offences have been destroyed in a major fire at the premises of the Income Tax department on Friday, according to sources here.”, which was latter quoted by the Congress. However this turned out to be false and fake especially after The Income Tax Department has rubbished these reports published and broadcast by mainstream media. The Income Tax India tweeted that “News reports appearing in some sections of media alleging that records/documents relating to investigation of Nirav Modi/Mehul Choksi have been destroyed in the Scindia House fire in ITOffice,Mumbai are completely false & misdirected @PMOIndia @FinMinIndia @arunjaitley @adhia03

Who all raised this point and were fast enough to say that the files were destroyed

  1. Tribuneindia was quick to say that the Files on absconding jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi apart from several others wanted for economic offences have been destroyed in a major fire
  2. Zee News was busy all the day broadcasting this news on the papers being destroyed
  3. Republic TV, The Mumbai Mirror, Indiatimes all speculated that the files have been destroyed.

News were published without proper confirmation of the news and just assumption that the files might have been destroyed.
