Fact Check: A dangerous escalation against Muslims in the Indian state of Assam

News Claim: An old video from June 2011 is widely shared among Pakistan users on social media claiming escalated police action against Muslims in India. It is a wrong narrative being set by Pakistan and its political leaders

Viral message on WhatsApp today, Social Media claims:

A dangerous escalation against Muslims in the Indian state of Assam: demolishing mosques, destroying Muslim homes, killing & arresting hundreds of them.Muslims face worst form of genocide in Assam at the hands of Terrorists RSS Fascists.

 

 

The same video is also being shared on Facebook with the same caption and was posted by Pakistani political commentator Moeed Pirzada.

News Verification: The shared video of the incident is new, but from Bihar, dated June 2011.

In the disturbing video, it can be seen a policeman jumping on a person's body lying in an unconscious state in a field in the Forbersganj industrial area of Bihar`s Araria district.

The video has been revived and falsely shared as visuals from the recent event of a similar nature in Darrang, Assam.

Recently a video of a photographer named Bijoy Baniya went viral, who was employed by the local Darrang district administration on September 23, 2021, was seen jumping over a unconscious person after he was shot and beaten by police personnel for attempting to attack them with a stick. The video of Baniya's actions went viral and he was soon arrested. Based on the video of Bijoy, the other video went viral in Pakistan news and social media

In the short clip viral on Pakistan social media, we can see a policeman verbally abusing a man lying unconscious and then jumping on his body.

The viral video is from June 2011, when a police firing had left four people dead in the Forbesganj area of Araria district in Bihar.

As per indianexpress news dated 2011, An industrial land dispute in Bihar occurred where four persons, including a woman and a child, were killed and more than a dozen policemen were injured after a pitched battle between villagers and policemen at Forbesganj in Araria.

The four, belonging to the minority community, were killed after the police opened fire on villagers protesting against a starch factory's compound wall blocking the village road.

As per thewire, In a video recording of the incident, you can see a young man lying in the sand, breathing; his name was Mustafa, and a few seconds in, a constable from the Home Guard, Sunil Kumar Yadav, brutally jumps on him, abusing him, again and again; a senior officer can be heard saying ‘sazaa mil gayi’ (‘he’s got his punishment’) in the background.
