News Claim: A message viral since 2018, stating that Elon Musk will buy and delete Facebook, it is tougher than done, the message is not true.

We don’t let 1 person control the water for 2.5 billion people. We don’t let 1 person control electricity for 2.5 billion people. Why do we let 1 man control the information seen by 2.5 billion people? Facebook needs to be regulated by governments, not ruled by an emperor!

News Verification: There is some ongoing rivalry going on between Elon Musk and Facebook. This started since SpaceX explosion destroys Facebook satellite in 2016.
Soon Tesla and SpaceX left Facebook, Elon Musk commented, “It’s not a political statement and I didn’t do this because someone dared me to do it. Just don’t like Facebook. Gives me the willies. Sorry.” There is no further news from the Tesla owner on buying and deleting Facebook

This all started when the news was published in a website alternative, published an article in 2018 stating, “Today, Musk announced that he has reached out to Facebook and offered to buy every share of the company, effectively making him the sole owner of the social media platform. Musk was speaking to a gathering of SpaceX and Tesla investors and told the group even though he has deep misgivings about the site, he’d “do humanity a favour” and buy it.”
Last year in 2020, Elon Musk did say, “#DeleteFacebook It’s lame”. So he did encourage people to delete Facebook.

The social networking site Facebook was founded by Mr Zuckerberg and his roommates at Harvard University in 2004. Ever since it has overgrown and many similar sites like Orkut are out of business. As of 2021, Facebook had an estimated more than 2.5 billion monthly active users.
Hence it is not easy to purchase and delete Facebook. Elon Musk has not made any official announcement that he intended to own or shut down Facebook, though he has asked others to do so.
News verdict: This claim is completely false. Elon Musk and his company made no such claim.
