News Claim: A message is rapidly circulating on social media sites claiming that the central government is ready to implement GST on rent paid at homes and shops. Speculation claims that the decision will be announced after the 47th GST Council meeting to be held in May.

The news created panic among people as speculation went viral on social media sites that 12 per cent GST tax on rent of houses and shops would be introduced soon. This means those who pay rent of Rs 10,000 per month will have to pay tax of Rs 1,200 per month.

News Verification: The Press Information Bureau clarified that the Finance Ministry has not taken any such prior decision for the upcoming GST Council meeting and has declared it as fake news. This viral message is baseless and the government has no such planning.

As per the PIB Fact Check team, the Finance Ministry has not undertaken such a prior decision for the forthcoming GST Council meeting.

In a tweet, the government's nodal agency rejected the claim, saying, “Ministry of Finance has made no such prior decision for the forthcoming GST Council meeting. Please refrain from sharing these posts.”

News Verdict ayupp.com: The Centre has no plans to introduce 12 per cent GST on house and shop rents, at this stage. The news is false.
