Facts Check Verdict: False, unclear
News Verification: can pangolin be the real source or origin of the coronavirus, it may be true as based on the initial reports coming out of China.
Pangolins or scaly anteaters are mammals of the order Pholidota. The one extant family, Manidae, has three genera: Manis, which comprises four species living in Asia; Phataginus, which comprises two species living in Africa; and Smutsia, which comprises two species also living in Africa.
China’s official Xinhua news agency reported that the genome sequence of the novel coronavirus strain separated from pangolins in the study was 99% identical to that from infected people. However, James Wood, head of the veterinary medicine department at the Britain’s University of Cambridge, said the research was far from robust.
As per reuters,, Pangolins are one of Asia’s most trafficked mammals, despite laws banning the trade, because their meat is considered a delicacy in countries such as China and their scales are used in traditional medicine.
Virus experts think it may have originated in bats and then passed to humans, possibly via another species.
The deadly coronavirus outbreak in China could have spread from bats to humans through the illegal traffic of pangolins, the world’s only scaly mammals, which are prized in Asia for food and medicine, Chinese researchers said https://t.co/QzYOu13O9f pic.twitter.com/RyCjn3bCXR
