Being surrounded by books is routine for civil services aspirants, but for a coolie who cleared the Civil Services written test of the Kerala Public Service Commission, the preparation only comprised his mobile phone equipped with the free Wi-Fi services available at Kerala’s Ernakulam railway station, and a pair of earphones. 

It’s true: Sreenath K is a high-school pass out porter hailing from Munnar, the nearest major railway station from which is Ernakulam, who cracked the KPSC exam.

Meet the coolie who used railway WiFi to crack Kerala civil services examWhen Google and Indian Railways joined hands to launch WiFi in 2016, it was an initiative to empower passengers. Two years later, in Ernakulam, a coolie cleared his KPSC (Kerala Public Service Commission) exams, thanks to this very free WiFi.

Sreenath K earned a living as a coolie, carrying passengers’ luggage at the railway station. When not ferrying bags, Sreenath would prepare for the civil services exam, taking notes on his phone. While at work, he listened to audio books and digital courses.

A high school passout, his story has inspired many in his region.

Sreenath K, a porter at Ernakulum junction in Kerala’s Kochi, has qualified for Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) with help of free WiFi at Railway station. 

Being surrounded by books is a matter of routine for civil services aspirants, but Sreenath K, a coolie who cleared the written test of the Kerala Public Service Commission, the preparation is just about his phone and earphones as he goes about his job. 

Sreenath has been earning his livelihood carrying heavy luggage at Ernakulam Junction in Kerala for the past five years. Unlike his colleagues, he deftly balances the luggage on his shoulders and listens to his digital coursework at the same time - his teachers speaking to him through the earphones.

A high school pass-out, he takes advantage of the free WiFi Internet service available at Ernakulam station to learn. He has appeared thrice for the exam and this is the first time he used the WiFi at the station.
