यह बात है सन 1930-35 के करीब की जब जर्मनी के इतिहासकार वहां की बहुत पुरानी जगहों की खुदाई कर रहे थे, तब उन्हें वहां पर बहुत सी चीजें मिली थी। पहले तो उन्हें उस जगह पर पक्षियों ,घोडों, कछुए, और कुछ शेरों के अवशेष मिले, बाद में गहन खोज करने पर उन्हें नरसिंह भगवान की एक दुर्लभ प्रतिमा मिली। यह स्वाभिक था कि जिस जगह पर सिवाए जनवरों के अवशेषों के अलावा कुछ नहीं है वहां पर इस तरह की दुर्लभ मुर्ति मिलना बहुत चमत्कारिक था। इस खोज नो उस समय सबको हैरान में डाल दिया था।
इस मुर्ति को 1939 में Stadel-Höhle im Hohlenstein ((Stadel cave in Hohlenstein Mountain) नाम की गुफा में खोजा गया था।
सन 1939 में जर्मनी और पुरे विश्व में दुसरा विश्व युद्ध छिड़ गया जिस कारण इस मुर्ति से पुरी दुनिया का ध्यान हट गया था। फिर बाद में सन 1998 में मुर्ति के सभी टुकड़ो को जोडकर उसे नया रूप दिया जो एक दम भगवान विष्णु के नरसिंह अवतार की तरह लग रही थी।
भगवान विष्णु ने एक हिरण्यकश्यपु राक्षस को मारने के लिए नरसिंह का रूप धारण किया था। नरसिंह रूप का अर्थ होता है – आधा शेर और आधा मनुष्य। वेदो और शास्त्रों में इस घटना का पुरा वर्णन मिलता है।
