Muzzafarpur, Bihar, India – Lychee is one of the most delicious fruits eaten in India. But the incidence in Bihar has made everyone to think twice about it.
Many children’s lost their life due to lack of awareness. After long research of many years, it has come to light that, malnourished childrens, who used to eat lychee, empty stomach. It leads to high fever and then death in young kids. Parents rush to hospital, but in 40% of the cases children’s were not saved.

Unripe Litchi is not safe when it is eat in empty stomach. It contains the toxin named as Methylene cyclopropyl-glycine (MCPG). It was detected in lychee fruit by a team of virologists led by T Jacob John at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, in India.
Due to above scenario, almost 122 deaths were reported in 2014. It was reported in the month of May and July. Almost 400 children’s were admitted. All these kids had same symptoms of eating lychee empty stomach.
After investigation, it was found that the kids had their glucose blood levels lower than 70 mg/dL and also MCPG and hypoglycin was found in their urine samples.
Hypoglycin is found in lychee. It is a form of amino acid which causes vomiting. On the other hand MCPG is termed as a toxic compound present in lychee seeds. It leads to fall of blood sugar. When these two toxic chemical are combined in human body, it can lead to death.
Solution – If someone is suffering from such situation, it would be advisable to supply them sugar as fast as possible. Avoid eating lychee empty stomach.
