Facts Check Analysis: Truly said Old is gold and this can be also said in case of the Old trap to lure people into taking out their hard earned money.

Mostly the message reads as “you are winner of Homeshop 18 company tv show you win -1st prize”, this is just an example. People, who get the message, are lured by the easy money they are going to get after the payment is dispersed.

How does the scam work..

Lets say Mr XXX gets a call / message from any unknown number. He is made to believe that he is being called from some reputed brand. Here in the example the brands are line some shopping store, where you might have visited some time earlier to do some shopping.

The caller or sender of the message would claim that the money has been credited or would be credited to your account. Some times like the message circulating on the social media the caller claims, the people of winning lucky draw winner like cars/bikes like tata safari etc.

Once people start talking they might receive further messages, information related to their progress that how close they are in getting the money or the gift. Further he would be getting message like he has to pay certain money as part of GST, registration, inter city money transfer charges and other charges.

Once any people start getting confirmed by the caller, they start giving out some money/ thus falling into the trap of the caller/ sender of the message. Many people have lost lakhs of money in similar way. Such types of money trap where people fall are called advance-fee scam.

An advance-fee scam is a form of fraud and one of the most common types of confidence tricks. The scam typically involves promising the victim a significant share of a large sum of money, in return for a small up-front payment, which the fraudster requires in order to obtain the large sum.

There has been a high increase in such cased over the years, though people are aware of the internet and have knowledge to fact check about such fake calls.

A data from Cyber crime police station shows that from 290 cases in 1997 to 945 cases in 2018.

Beware of such people / calls / messages, mostly will tempt you into getting easy money or gift, but ultimately you will end up losing your hard earned money.
