New Delhi, Nirbhaya gang rape case: The Supreme Court of India on Monday reserved its judgement of the four convicts in Nirbhaya gang-rape case which was challenged in the Delhi High Court's order of death sentence for Akshay, Pawan, Vijay and Mukesh.
The Supreme Court said "SC reserves judgement on the appeals filed by four death row convicts on December 16, 2012, gangrape and murder case," as quoted in PTI.
The convicts of the Nirbhaya gang rape Akshay, Vijay, Pawan and Mukesh have challenged the Delhi High Court order which had earliar sentenced the four of them to be hanged till death.
The High Court had awarded death penalty for five of the six convicts considering the mass protests across the nation after the Nirbhaya death, especially in capital Delhi where the crime took place.
One of convict is out of prison for being a juvenile, another accused Ram Singh is already dead as he committed suicide in his cell inside Tihar Jail in March 2013.
The 23-year-old paramedic was brutally assaulted and raped by six persons in a moving bus in south Delhi. Later she was thrown out of the vehicle with her male friend on the night of December 16, 2012. She had died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.
The convicts had approached the apex court against the high court's March 13, 2014 verdict which had observed that their offence fell in the rarest of the rare category and had upheld the death sentence awarded to them by the trial court.
