Mumbai: 4-storey building collapses, 8 dead rescue operation underway
Mumbai: Eight people lost their lives and many have been trapped as two wings of a four-storey building collapsed in Ghatkopar here on Tuesday morning.
Dozens of people were believed missing under rubble after the structure, in Ghatkopar's Damodar Park area, gave way. He said they were alerted to the collapse at 10:43 am.
The entire ground and four floored residential building collapsed. About 30 to 40 persons are suspected to be trapped. Until now 11 persons have been rescued and sent to hospital.
A team of Mumbai Police, fire department and disaster management is at the spot for rescue and relief operation. It is learned that there was a maternity home on the ground floor of the building which was undergoing repairs.
All the floor in the building were occupied by two to four families. The building has a RCC structure and currently the removal of topmost RCC slab is in progress.
4 fire engines, two rescue vans and 8 ambulances were at the site. State Housing Minister Prakash Mehta, senior officials of the BMC and others have rushed to the site to supervise rescue and relief operations.
