Beating Retreat: The function began with President Pranab Mukherjee arriving at the venue in the ceremonial buggy, His last time as the Head of State with his tenure ending this year 2017. The president Mukherjee assumed office in 2012 and during the 2014 Beating Retreat ceremony, the buggy was brought back, thirty years after it was discontinuation at public functions due to security reasons. Last time in 2015 the president, had arrived in his limousine.

Beating Retreat is a military ceremony quite old and followed from 16th century England. This was first used to recall nearby patrolling units to their castle. Originally it was known as watch setting and was initiated at sunset by the firing of a single round from the evening gun.

This year once again

The magnificent Beating Retreat officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. It is conducted on the evening of 29 January, the third day after the Republic Day. It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, and pipe bands from the Army, plus from 2016 a mass formation of bands of the Central Armed Police Forces and the Delhi Police. The venue is Raisina Hills and an adjacent square, Vijay Chowk, flanked by the north and south block of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, towards the end of Rajpath.

Foot-tapping music and soulful classical renditions rent the air as Republic Day celebrations culminated with the Beating Retreat ceremony in the national capital where President Pranab Mukherjee rode the ceremonial buggy - an open gold-plated carriage - down the Raisina Hill today. President Mukherjee, whose tenure ends later this year, greeted the spectators with a customary wave. Performance by the Indian Army, Air force and Naval bands and other. Cheering clouds  and the soft and the beautiful Rashtrapati Bhavan glowing just glowing like a dream of your love. Just awesome to see the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
