Like every year on Diwali, there has been a debate this year over pollution caused by firecrackers. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR from 9 to 30 November. Fireworks will not be sold not only in Delhi but also in the states where the air quality is poor.

A large section believes that it is wrong to stop people from burning firecrackers. #We_to_Patakha_Fodenge is trending in the top trend on Twitter. On social media, many messages are going viral in protest against the arguments attributed to the firecrackers. Bhaskar investigated one such message.

News verification: Assistant Professor of Biotechnology at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Dr. Kapil Dev, to know the truth of the claim that gunpowder was eradicated from mosquitoes. He called this claim being made on social media as misleading.

In 2018, the University of Minnesota and the National Institute of Finance and Policy did research on the impact of firecrackers on Delhi's bad air. Data from 2013 to 2016 were taken for this.

According to this research, the amount of PM 2.5 increases by 40% on the next day of Diwali in Delhi every year. PM2.5 increased by 100% between 6 pm and 11 pm on Diwali. PM2.5 means small particles present in air. The air quality deteriorates due to the increase of these particles.
