Fact check

Facebook posts claim that the coronavirus spreading in China was created by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2015, offering a real patent as proof. This is false; the CDC did register a patent, but in an effort to combat a different strain than the one that caused the outbreak that started in the city of Wuhan.

Fake news claim: Numerous Social Media post claimed that the coronavirus virus was created in US by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2015,

“So let me get this straight about this virus

It’s “new” yet it was lab-created and patented in 2015 (in development since 03’)

The patent expired (today) on the day the first case is announced in the US

The patent also tells us the CDC helped make this! “This invention was made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an agency of the United States Government. Therefore, the U.S. Government has certain rights in this invention.”

And now magically a vaccine is in the works for it already? Yet the patent in 2015 already references a vaccine for it.

But what do I know I’m just a conspiracy theorist.” - Chris Kirckof

It’s time to SEEK information - eyes wide open over here 💫

If anyone’s curious where this new virus came from maybe the most logical question to ask is why is there a patent for it from 2015? Of course the vaccine is coming but first they need to manufacture fear....lots and lots of fear to scare you about it.

So let me get this straight about this virus

It’s “new” yet it was lab created and patented in 2015 (in development since 03’)

The patent expired Jan 21, 2020. Same day the first case is announced in the US

Facts Check Verdict: False/Misleading

News Verification: As thousands of users on Facebook shared the news that coronavirus was created and patented by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2015. We found the claim to be false and misleading.

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds that include diarrhea in cows and pigs, and upper respiratory disease in chickens. In humans, the virus causes respiratory infections, which are often mild, but in rare cases are potentially lethal. There are no vaccines or antiviral drugs that are approved for prevention or treatment.

Coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s; the earliest ones discovered were infectious bronchitis virus in chickens and 2 viruses from the nasal cavities of human patients with the common cold that were subsequently named human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43. Other members of this family have since been identified, including SARS-CoV in 2003, HCoV NL63 in 2004, HKU1 in 2005, MERS-CoV in 2012, and 2019-nCoV in 2019; most of these have been involved in serious respiratory tract infections, albeit rarely.

As per cdc, Human coronaviruses are common throughout the world. Seven different coronaviruses, that scientists know of, can infect people and make them sick.

We have no information to prove that the viral message stating the coronavirus created and patented by US. Going by the patent link.

This is a patent covering the sequence of the 2003 SARS-CoV which differs by 25 percent as compared to the Wuhan CoV,” Ralph Baric, a specialist in coronaviruses at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. The patent mentioned in the link is a false post is for the genome sequence of the coronavirus that emerged in China’s Guangdong province in 2002- 2003, known as the isolated human coronavirus (SARS-CoV) .

Novel coronavirus, denoted 2019-nCoV by the WHO (Chinese: 2019) and also known as Wuhan coronavirus; traditional Chinese: and Wuhan seafood market pneumonia virus, is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA coronavirus. The first suspected cases were notified to WHO on 31 December 2019, with the first instances of symptomatic illness appearing just over three weeks earlier on 8 December 2019. The virus was genomically sequenced after nucleic acid testing on a positive patient sample in a patient with pneumonia during the 2019–20 Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

A false rumor that the coronavirus outbreak is a plot by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates was also being spread by supporters of the pro-Trump QAnon movement and the anti-vax community.
