India, New Delhi, August 29: The Supreme Court on Monday slammed Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan for his controversial remarks on Bulandshahr gangrape incident.
The apex court has issued a notice to Azam Khan for saying that the gangrape incident could possibly be a 'political conspiracy' since assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh were approaching.
He mentioned that it could be a desperate attempt by the opposition to defame Akhilesh Yadav government in the state. The court said that statements like those of SP leader Azam Khan create mistrust in the investigation and the entire system.
SC questioned if the statements calling rape a conspiracy be termed as freedom of speech or defeat principles of constitutional compassion. The family of the victim had threatened to commit suicide post incident if the police failed to do justice in three months time.
The Bulandshahr gangrape incident took place at NH-91 when some dacoits brutally gang raped a woman and her 13-year-old daughter at gunpoint after robbing the family, travelling from Noida to Shahjahanpur.
Three accused namely Naresh (25), Bablu (22), and Rais (28) were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police while a dozen others were detained for the highway crime.
