India:  Recently there were as many as 23 deaths in India due to mob lynching and directly of indirectly the social media were mostly responsible for these deaths.

The Ministry of Electronics & IT headed by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed “Lynching of people by mob because of mass circulation of misinformation is unfortunate and alarming. Ministry of IT had sent a notice to Whatsapp regarding this. Whatsapp must remain accountable, responsible and vigilant. Whatsapp must ensure that this platform is not misused.”

Seeing all this government of India had a stern warning to the countries largest social media group, whatsapp. The government of India wants this social media companies to control their usage, so that malafide activities can be controlled.

The Ministry of Electronics & IT headed by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, in a press release issued to the media said, Whatsapp needs to recognize that India offers a huge market for them, there are making  good money, out of India’s operation, therefore they must focus on the security aspect in India in particular

“India is one of the biggest markets for Whatsapp having biggest user base in the world. Therefore, it is important for Whatsapp to focus on security related aspects of people of India as well.”

In yet another tweet Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted reply from whatsapp “I appreciate prompt reply of Whatsapp to our notice. They have promised that they would create a label for forwarded message. They have also assured that Whatsapp will use machine learning to identify mass circulation of messages on its platform. I expect prompt action from them.”

However as whatsapp is mainly related to one to one posting of information over the mobile or desktop devices, it would be interesting to see how the spread of fake news can be controlled on the social media, if the users are not smart enough to understand, what is fake and what is real.
