CBI chief, Alok Kumar Verma: The Central government appointed Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma as the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years.

The CBI chief was appointed by a panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Prior to being the police chief of the national capital, Ajay Verma was the Director General (Prisons) of Delhi.

After Anil Sinha, the CBI directors post was vacant for more than a month. He was the Police Commissioner Since February 29, 2016.

Mallikarjun Kharge  is not happy over the appointment of Verma. During a meeting to appoint the CBI chief, He had reportedly opposed his appointment having concern that Alok Verma had never served in the agency. Kharge had also apprehensive against the move to make Alok Verma as CBI chief saying that his appointment would be in violation of Supreme Court guidelines.
