1. Modi government announced demonetisation; Nov 8

Unlike just like another political party, just trying to complete the 5 long years in the parliament, The Narendra Modi, Making its most impactful decision since coming to power, the Modi government on November 8 announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes would cease to be legal tender post midnight.

The government said that the move was aimed at combating black money menace and terror funding. The move has evoked mixed reactions. While some find it to be a bold step against black money, some feel that the government did not prepare for it, causing trouble to the common man. New notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 were introduced.

2.   India carried out surgical strike; Sept 29

Eleven days after the Uri attack on an Indian Army camp, India retaliated in the form of a surgical strike across the Line of Control on September 29, 2016.

While India confirmed the strike, calling it a move to safeguard the nation, Pakistan went on to dismiss the claim saying no surgical strike ever took place. The neighbouring country termed it as an instance of ceasefire violation by India, to which their forces retaliated. According to Army, several terror launch pads in PoK were destroyed during the strike.

3.   Jayalalithaa dies at 68: Dec 5

J Jayalalithaa, one of India's most popular politicians, breathed her last on December 5, 2016, following a cardiac arrest. Lakhs of people, including President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid their last tributes to the mass leader in Chennai before she was laid to rest next to the memorial of her mentor, MG Ramachandran at marina beach in chenna, Tamil Nadu.

4.   Panama Papers leaked; April 3

Around 11.5 million leaked documents disclosing financial and attorney–client information for over 214,488 offshore entities were released to the media. Prepared by Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, the documents revealed, among other things, the widespread use of shell corporations for fraud and tax evasion.

Reporters from 107 media organizations and 80 countries carefully analyzed the documents before releasing the initial reports on April 3. The list implicated or named hundreds of prominent businesspeople, retired and sitting politicians and other well-known personalities. 

5.   Debit card breach

Around 30 lakh debit cards in India came under security threat after a security breach at an ATM of a private ban raised fears of potential fraud. Most of the banks asked its customers to change their security codes in what was termed as the country’s one of the biggest ever breaches of financial data.

India’s largest commercial bank, State Bank of India, blocked around 6 lakh debit cards and issued them new cards as precautionary measure.

6.   Raghuram Rajan term ends

Reserve Bank of India’s governor Raghuram Rajan’s term ended. After his three-year tenure at the country’s central bank, the governor refused for a second term, and announced returning to academia.

7.   Urjit Patel takes over as RBI governor

Urjit R Patel assumed charge as the twenty-fourth governor of the Reserve Bank of India effective September 4, 2016 after serving as deputy governor since January 2013.

8.   Tata Sons sacks Cyrus Mistry

Tata Sons removed Cyrus Mistry as its chairman, nearly four years after he took over the reins of the over $100 billion salt-to-software conglomerate.

Tata Sons chairman emeritus, Ratan Tata, whom Mistry had replaced on December 29, 2012, was appointed as the interim chairman of the group. The search committee was formed to look for a replacement.

9. Reliance Jio launch

Reliance Industries’ chairman Mukesh Ambani unveiled its Jio telecom network, touting free calls and rock-bottom data prices. Free voice calls, low data usage charges, lucrative schemes for students –Ambani had something for everyone in Reliance Jio.

The launch went viral on the internet with its announcement of ‘4G-only’ network launch offering all its customers free 4G services till march 31, 2017.

10. Assembly Elections 2016

Assembly elections to four states - West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam. Kerala - and one Union Territory - Puducherry - were held in April-May 2016.

While Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and late Jayalalithaa's AIADMK retained power in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu respectively, Congress governments were toppled in Kerala and Assam. In Puducherry, the election was won by the Congress party.
