Odd-even rule in Delhi: Seeing a rise and to check the growing pollution in the capital state, New Delhi, The Supreme Court said that the odd-even scheme could be reintroduced in the national capital in a bid to put a check on pollution level in Delhi.
The odd-even rule can be implemented next month. The state has one month to prepare for it.
Supreme Court cleared potential hurdles for the government in re-introducing the radical plan that allows vehicles to run on alternate days based on the last four digits of their registration numbers.
"There can be chaos if we do not plan the scheme well. As we don't have enough number of buses, we have to hire buses to improve public transport as people will leave cars," officials said.
The Delhi government had introduced the scheme twice and many experts are divided over its result.
The Supreme Court added that the odd-even scheme can be automatically enforced if air pollution breaches the PM2.5 emergency level of 300 micrograms per cubic metre for 48 hours at a stretch in the city.
It was the worst time at the time of Dipawali when Delhi witnessed the highest pollution it has ever got.
What is the odd-even rule?
Under this Rule, vehicles are allowed to run across the city based on their registration numbers. For example, if a vehicle’s registration number ends with an odd digit, it will be allowed on the road on Jan 1, 2017, while those ending with an even number can be driven on Jan 2, 2017, and so on for the rest of the days till the scheme continues.

Delhi High Court directed the Centre and State governments to come up with comprehensive action plans to put a check on city’s “alarming” pollution rate. Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has come up with this scheme to bring down the city’s air pollution proportion.
Some other points you should know about the second round of Odd-even rule in Delhi:
- Odd-even rule defines which car you can drive on a particular date. On even dates, only cars with license plates ending with an even number will be permitted and on odd dates, cars with odd number will be allowed.
- Odd-even rule violation will lead to a levy of a fine in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 194 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
- This rule is not being applicable on emergency vehicles like PCR vans, fire tenders and ambulances.
