News Verification: UP elections are very near and readers will see much such news becoming viral in the coming days. Now the picture of a 92-year-old late Swamy is viral on social media, he died of heart arrest.

Stan Swamy, an 84-year-old priest-activist arrested under an anti-terror law in the Elgar Parishad case last year.  Stan Swamy had told the High Court via video-conferencing that his health had consistently declined at the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai and if he was not granted interim bail, he "would die soon".

The Elgaar Parishad was an event held on 31 December 2017 to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima. It was organised by a coalition of 260 non-profit organisations at Pune's Shaniwarwada Fort, and had approximately 35,000 people in attendance.

However the picture shared on social media of a man chained to a hospital bed is not of Stan Swamy, it is of Baburam Singh. The 90-year-old prisoner was reported to be chained during treatment at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Etah. The 92-year-old prisoner, suffering difficulty breathing

As soon as the matter came to light, DG Jail Anand Kumar suspended Ashok Yadav, the warden of the jail where the elderly is serving his sentence.
 

 

Baburam Balwan Singh, who was brought to Etah jail on February 6 this year after being convicted in the murder case, is a resident of the district’s Kulla Habibpur village.
