Bhiwandi, November 16: Rahul Gandhi, The Congress vice-president on Wednesday appeared in the court in Bhiwandi in a defamation case following an alleged comment against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, for the complaint filed against him in 2014 by a local court in Mumbai by, Rajesh Kunte.

Then in 6, March, 2014, Mr. Rahul Gandhi had made a speech in Bhiwandi, holding the organisation responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. He had said, "RSS people killed Gandhiji and today their people [BJP] talk of him...They opposed Sardar Patel and Gandhiji.”

Rahul Gandhi was later granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 15,000. His lawyer informed the court that the bail plea has been filed and the surety had given an undertaking on May 8 itself that he will appear when needed.  Shivraj Patil, The former union minister stood as surety for the bail for the Congress leader.

The High Court dismissed Rahul's plea to quash the criminal defamation case but also exempted him from a personal appearance before the magistrate in Bhiwandi. Thereafter, Rahul Gandhi moved the SC with a special leave petition (SLP) for permission in order to challenge the HC dismissal of the plea.
