New Delhi: Congress has fielded former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar against NDA Candidate Ramnath Kovind for the presidential election. Meira was the first woman to become the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Unknown facts of the Opposition president candidate of Meira Kumar

#1. She is the daughter of Congress leader of Bihar Jagjivan Ram, who was the youngest member of the Nehru cabinet. Jagannath Ram's wife Indrani Devi gave birth to Meira on March 31, 1945. The place was Patna.
 
#2. Meira Kumar did her schooling from Welham Girls School, Dehradun and Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls Public School, in Jaipur. For some time she also studied at Banasthali University. She did Graduation and PG from IP College. From Miranda College she did LLB after studying MA.


# 3 During the law's education, she met Manjul Kumar. Manjul was also from Bihar and from a political family. His mother Sumitra Devi was the leader of the Congress. Meira and Manjul married on November 29, 1968. This was intercaste marriage. Manjul comes from the Koairi race of Bihar, which is counted in OBC, while Meira Kumar comes from the Dalit family.
 
# 4. In 1973 Meira Kumar cleared the Civil Services exam. She became the officer of the Indian Foreign Service. It was the great influence from her father that 12 places of her service were cut in three places. Spain, England and Mauritius. When Jagjivan Ram became Deputy under Prime Minister of the Janata Party government in 1977, Meira Kumar got the posting in the Indian High Commission, London.

In the elections held in early 1985, she contested from the Bijnor safe seat of UP. she defeated Ram Vilas Paswan and Mayawati and entered the Lok Sabha for the first time. After a year, when her father died, the party created by him also ended.


# 9. In 1989, Meira Kumar reached her father's seat in Sasaram (Bihar). She was defeated by Janata Dal's Chhedi Paswan This was also repeated in 1991. Then she returned to his real house that is Delhi The next two elections took place between 1996 and 1998 in Delhi's Karol Bagh seat and she won. Then lost in 1999 from Anita Arya of BJP once again and she returend to Sasaram.
 
# 10. In 2004, when Meira Kumar reached Sasaram for the third time, she was in front of a retired bureaucrat and Sitting MP BJP's Munni Lal. Meira Kumar won the elections for the first time from the father's seat. That too with a big difference of 2.5 million, then she became a minister in the Manmohan Singh government.


# 11. Meira Kumar has been recorded in history in 2009 for being the first Country's female speaker also the second Dalit speaker of the country. Earlier, TDP's GMC Balayogi had reached this position. But his plane had died in the crash.
